How Shopping Online Can Put Money Back in Your Pocket

Shopping online can yield tens of thousands of bonus miles and points per year.  An extra minute or two tacked onto each purchase isn't much when you think about the value that time can generate.

This isn't the first time I've written about a great mileage earning deal at Sephora or a successful triple/quadruple dip.  These are great anecdotes to share because they illustrate the point (get it) that with a small amount of extra time, you can generate an outsized return on your online shopping spend.  Especially if you redeem the miles and points earned for premium travel.

eBay is pretty consistently selling gift cards at a discount.  A few weeks ago they were selling $110 Sephora gift cards for $100.  Emily is always good for a Sephora purchase and I can usually find some things on the "need this" list as well.

shopathome usually pays 1 - 2% for eBay purchases

Here's what I did:

  • Went through the www.shopathome.com portal to earn 1.5x cash back on my Ebay purchase
  • Purchased a $110 Sephora gift card for $100 while earning 4x eBay bucks during a promotion using my Chase Ink card which earned 5x points (coding as office supplies)
  • Made a $110 Sephora purchase through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Mall earning 5x UR points in the process

All in, I spent $100.  I earned:
  • $1.50 through shopathome
  • $4.00 in eBay bucks
  • 500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points for the gift card purchase
  • $10 by purchasing the discounted gift card
  • 550 Chase Ultimate Rewards points for the Sephora purchase
Earning 5x at Sephora through from Chase

So I earned $15.50 cash equivalent and 1050 points which I value around $21.  That is ~$37 in "rebates" of one form or another on a $100 purchase - nearly 37% back on spend.  The extra "hoops" probably took me a total of 5 extra minutes across two purchases.   It took me more time to write this blog post!  So take an extra couple of minutes when you're buying something online.  It may be the difference between a middle seat in economy and flying upfront!
