Singapore Airlines Book the Cook

Many airlines offer a chance to pre-select meals in premium cabins.  Asiana, Thai, and Singapore to name a few Asian carriers offering the service.  In the US, American has a version of this service where premium cabin passengers can select their meal choice from the menu - to ensure they get their first selection.

Singapore Airlines' "Book the Cook" program seems to be the most comprehensive of these services. We've flown Singapore Airlines First Class several times (trip reports here and here) and we've been pleasantly surprised with our "Book the Cook" entrees each time.  From what I have read, SQ is offering the service in First, Business, and Premium Economy - so this is an option a lot of passengers not the plane have access to.

A sampling of First Class Book the Cook offerings

For our upcoming flight home from Frankfurt to JFK, we selected our meals online from the menu.  The hardest part was deciding what to order!  I selected the Lobster Thermidor - I had it on a previous flight and it is spectacular.

You can access the book the cook menu for your flight by logging into your KrisFlyer account, navigating to your booking and clicking on the "select meals" icon on the right hand side of the screen.  Menus for departure cities and cabin class can be found online here.

Introduction: A Week (Euro) in Amsterdam and Paris

British Airways A320 Club World London to Amsterdam

Singapore Airlines A380 Suites Class Frankfurt to JFK

While I am still working on the trip report for our Long Weekend in Vancouver, I figured I might as well mix it up and post the Introduction to our May trip to Europe.  We're inside a month from departure and starting to piece together the final components to make the trip as awesome as possible.  Over the past 2.5 years, we've taken 6 long-haul trips.  Of those trips, four have been to Asia, one to Europe, and one in the middle (Dubai & Istanbul).  So we have really neglected Europe for no reason other than it is easier to get to from Denver and we'll probably be more likely to go with a kid.  But with the Euro basically crashing (thus the clever trip report series title) against the dollar and the addition of British Airways First Class service direct from Denver we decided a week in Europe would be pretty fun.

Euro to USD 5 year chart

We wanted to start the trip somewhere relatively close to London so we could get in at a decent hour. I've yet to visit Amsterdam and Emily hasn't been for many years.  We both love walking around cities and Amsterdam is a VERY walkable city.  Add in the mix of water (boat trips yay!) and history and it was an easy choice.  We'll start our week with a few nights in Amsterdam at the Waldorf-Astoria and then Andaz which are only a few blocks away from each other.

Originally we were going to fly over to Vienna from Amsterdam but decided that 3 cities in 7 days was just too much.  So we're going to take the train from Amsterdam to Paris which is only a 3.5 hour  ride.  Given the Euro, tickets were really quite reasonable.  Only $85 each for Comfort One (Thalys' equivalent of first class).  It will certainly be a different experience and should enable us to maximize our time on the ground in both cities.

Routing courtesy of the Great Circle Mapper - almost 11,000 miles

We'll then spend four nights at the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendome which is something we rarely do.  From everything I have read and heard from people, this is a very special property and one that we want to enjoy for as long as possible.  Paid rates were north of $1,000 USD so I was very glad to be able to get all four nights with a combination of points and free nights from the Chase Hyatt Visa.  We plan to enjoy Spring in Paris and do a day trip out to Reims for some Champagne tours and tasting.

Singapore Suites beverage service

We'll then take a quick hop on Lufthansa (in Economy!) to Frankfurt where we'll spend the night at the Sheraton at the airport.  Our flight the next morning departs at 8AM to New York.  We'll be taking Singapore Airlines' fifth freedom service from Frankfurt to JFK in Singapore Suites!!  This is a hard redemption to get especially for two seats so we were both excited to be able to fly across the pond in real style.

I'll try to post the Planning & Booking segment prior to departure.  Follow along on Instagram, Facebook, and the blog as we spend a week in Europe in May!

Apparently, post milestones are for Singapore First Class posts.  Number 150 was my last flight in Singapore Suites.  This one (number 200!) will cover our first class flight on the 777 from San Francisco to Hong Kong.  This is going to be a pretty epic trip report so please enjoy!  One note - due to the late departure and the fact that the cabin was dimmed/dark during most of the meal service, I didn't take a ton of food pics.

Originally, we had booked United's direct service to Hong Kong from San Francisco.  A few days before departure, I was able to change our flight to Singapore Airlines First Class with the same routing.  The flight operates as SQ001 (flight #1) which is pretty cool.  While I would love another crack at Suites Class, the equipment used on this route is a 777-300ER with the "old" first class seats. We've flown this configuration before so we pretty much knew what to expect.

Enjoying the last few minutes of Christmas aboard SQ001

Due to weather and a diversion due to a medical issue, our flight from Denver to San Francisco encountered multiple delays and left us very little time to make the long haul flight.  Despite the delays, we arrived at the gate area for SQ001 just as they were preparing to board.  We still needed boarding passes so went straight to the gate agent who had them ready for us.  I had called Singapore Airlines customer service from Denver to let them know about the delay.  Not sure if they would have held the plane for us at all but they were definitely prepared for our late arrival.  Just one of the reasons why they are awesome!

Flying Singapore First Class to Hong Kong!

I've written about "gardening" award redemptions (both flights and hotels) several times in the past.  As a trip approaches, I'll usually spend a few minutes every few days checking award space on itineraries that would make the trip "better" as airlines typically release unsold space close to departure.

We have limited time for this trip so getting to Hong Kong quickly (vs. a more circuitous routing) is definitely a priority.  There are only a handful of options that would be better than our original routing on United Global First from San Francisco to Hong Kong.  So either Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines direct from San Francisco to Hong Kong were really our best options.  I had struck out finding space in first on Cathay and Singapore until Sunday.  Two first class seats were available at the saver level on SQ1 which is a pretty cool Singapore Airlines fifth freedom route.

Singapore Airlines 777-300 ER First Class
I quickly transferred the additional miles required (from Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi Thank You points, and American Express Membership Rewards) to my Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer account.  By Monday morning, the points were in my account.  Five minutes later, I had us booked.  While not Singapore Suites, I'm not complaining.  This route is operated by a 777-300ER and will be a huge upgrade over United Global First!

Total cost was 140,250 miles and $207 USD.  We will definitely get our money's worth in Dom and Krug.  I was also able to drop our United long-haul segment from the reservation (online) so we could keep the DEN - SFO segment.  That resulted in a net $38 cost and a refund of 125,000 United MileagePlus miles.

A few key takeaways:

1)  If you can, be flexible
2)  Diversify your miles and points currency
3)  Invest in "transferable" currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards

I'll be posting/instagramming so make sure to subscribe to the blog (right hand navigation towards at the top) and follow me on Instagram.

Happy Holidays!

Singapore Suites on ABC

Last week, ABC did a story on Singapore Suites.  One of their reporters had the really challenging job of flying Singapore Suites from JFK to Frankfurt on a ticket provided by the airline.  I wonder how he returned to New York?

The video provides some additional perspective on the size of the seat, bed, food quality, etc...

This is my 150th blog post and it's going to be my best post ever.  So grab some coffee (or a cocktail) and sit back, relax and enjoy the long and luxurious ride from Singapore to Los Angeles.

After a great breakfast in The Private Room, we went for a walk around Changi's T3 and did a bit of shopping.  The terminal is beautiful and has so many amenities (great shopping, butterfly garden, koi pond, etc...) that it would be easy to kill many hours during a layover.  But alas out flight was about to depart so we headed over to the gate to go through security and board our whale jet home.

SIN - NRT

I wanted to snap a few cabin pics so we got in line and ended up being the first people on the plane.  We were warmly welcomed by an army of cabin attendants who showed us to our suites in the front of the first level.  My first impression of the suite was phenomenal.  The sheer size and personal space, layout, materials, colors.  We were seated in suites 3C and 3D which I think are the best seats for couples (there are only two rows of two in the 14 suite cabin layout).  While having a window would have been awesome, having the double bed was an unique experience and I think more memorable than the view.  Courtesy of Seat Guru, here's the seat map:

Our bags were stowed and we began to relax when the cabin manage came over to introduce himself.  He informed us that "a celebrity" would be sitting in front of us today and seemed to be pretty excited.  I'm not exactly sure of the protocol here but it seemed somewhat odd that they proactively told us.  But perhaps it reduces over the top reactions later.  Last time we flew on Singapore with Chelsea Clinton, this time it would be Zoe Saldana and her husband so our celeb streak stayed intact.

We woke up around 6:30 AM and finished packing before heading out to grab a cab to the airport.  It was Sunday morning and it took around 15 minutes to actually get a cab with the hotel's assistance.  I was about to pull the trigger on an Uber but was glad I didn't since the cab (~$17 USD) cost about a third of the price.

Singapore Airlines First Class Check-In

We informed the driver that we were headed to the dedicated first class check-in facility at T3 and we were on our way.  When we arrived, there were half a dozen people outside waiting to grab our bags and escort us into the facility.  Once check-in was completed, we were handed boarding passes and lounge invitations and pointed in the direction of fast track immigration.  Last time we were here we were escorted all the way to the immigration line but not this time.  Certainly not a big deal as the terminal was quiet.

I'm going slightly out of order here (skipping the "exploring Bali" post) in order to finish this series as soon as possible.  After a great escort from the curb to immigration, we found ourselves airside with a couple of hours to kill.  The Bali airport opened in 2013 and it is gorgeous.  We enjoyed the architecture (the exterior is designed to mimic the ocean and the mountains of the island) and the decor inside.

As I mentioned in the introduction, we originally booked this trip for February of 2014.  So the planning process actually started late last summer when we had amassed enough Amex Membership Rewards points to book two first class return tickets from Singapore.  We knew we wanted to go to Bali and we knew we wanted to fly Singapore Suites.  So once we got that piece of the trip booked, most everything else fell into place.  Since we booked one-way tickets, I've broken up the booking thought process for each leg of the trip below.  If you have questions about the trip, let me know in the comments or email me.

This is the last pre-trip post.  Get ready for the actual trip reports coming in July.

Denver - Bali:

Getting to Bali is hard.  It's not that close to anything and from Denver, you're in for three flights at a minimum.  Last summer, I booked one-way business class tickets flying from Denver to Toronto United.  Then Toronto to Taipei on EVA with the final leg on EVA continuing on to Bali.  In December, first class space opened up (see:  importance of gardening reservations) on the Asiana New York to Seoul route.  This is the only Asiana (until they launch their A380) flight operated from the US with the closed door suites so it was an easy decision to change the routing.  The change required a nerve racking call to United (they weren't sure they could book the ticket and I was on hold for almost 30 minutes) but it ticketed and we have seats and an Asiana booking reference number.  There was no cost to change the routing - just an incremental 10,000 miles a piece for the first class segment.

Asiana First Class Suite

Because of the routing change, we'll have four flight segments and two overnights (first in New York then in Bangkok).  It's a lot of flying but we'll get to experience the Asiana suite, first class lounge in Seoul, and the Royal Orchard Spa in Bangkok.  Our final itinerary looks like this:

DEN - LGA in United First
JFK - ICN in Asiana First
ICN - BKK in Asiana Business (Two Cabin Flight)
BKK - DPS in Thai Business (Two Cabin Flight)

Total Cost:  140,000 United Miles & $28.80 in taxes and fees

Bali - Denver:

First, we had to figure out how to get from Bali to Singapore which was pretty easy.  I booked us in Singapore Airlines for the 2.5 hour ride to Singapore using United miles.  There are no fuel surcharges on this route which is great.

Singapore Airlines used to only make Suites class tickets available for around 1,000,000 miles per ticket.  They changed this policy at some point and now enable their own frequent flyer members (KrisFlyer) to book at the standard first class price.  Finding one seat at the lowest level (saver) is pretty easy but it's virtually impossible to find two seats on a flight to the US.  So if you want two seats on the same flight, your best bet is tell book one at the saver level and one at the standard level.  Luckily, we had been stocking up on American Express Membership Rewards points from multiple credit card sign-up bonuses.  Once I found the flights, I transferred the points in my KrisFlyer account and waited.  The transfer took a couple of days and it was time to book the flights online.

Singapore Airlines A380 Suites

Singapore Airlines provides a 15% discount if you book online.  The saver award ticket cost us 91,375 miles and the standard ticket cost us 178,500 miles.  Certainly a lot of miles but worth it considering this is the only way to fly this product together.  We also had to pay the fuel surcharges which total $796 USD.  During the 19 hour flight, I am pretty sure we will polish off a few bottles of Krug.  So we're getting a good amount of value for the fuel surcharges:)

Since the Singapore - LA flights using Singapore KrisFlyer miles, I had to pay our own way back to Denver.  I booked one way economy tickets on United for $290.  Our final itinerary looks like this:

DPS - SIN in Singapore Business (Two Cabin Flight)
SIN - NRT in Singapore Suites
NRT - LAX in Singapore Suites
LAX - DEN in United Economy

Total Cost:  35,000 United Miles, 269,875 Membership Rewards Points, and $1,086

Hotels:

Emily and I have traveled a fair amount together but we've only had a couple of airport overnights.  So we are doubling that with this trip!  We land at LGA around 10PM and will take a cab over to JFK and stay at the Sheraton JFK.  Rates were reasonable ($180) given the holiday weekend and I've heard the hotel is serviceable for a quick overnight (our flight leaves at 1PM the next day).

In Bangkok, we land around 10:30 PM and have a 9AM flight the next day to Bali.  We both want to be at the airport early the next morning to enjoy the Royal Orchid Spa for a bit so we decided to stay at the Novotel at the airport.  We found a prepaid rate on hotels.com for $130 and we can walk to the hotel.  I'm pretty happy with the decision especially given the current situation in Bangkok.

In Bali, I booked three nights in a pool suite at the St. Regis for 113,250 SPG points.  I have heard amazing things about the hotel...the rooms, property, service, and food are all supposed to be among the best in the SPG portfolio.  It was certainly a lot of SPG points to spend on a few nights but  a pretty good redemption given that rates for this room category (2,000 square feet, pool, butler service, breakfast included, airport transfer included, etc...) typically go for around $1,000/night.

St. Regis Bali
The St. Regis is on the beach and we wanted to spend a few days in Ubud to get a feel for that part of Bali.  We agonized over where to stay since there are SO many places none of which can be reserved with points.  We finally settled on the Four Seasons at Sayan which we are both really excited about.  I booked through American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts.  The hotel is pricey but it's the Four Seasons and daily breakfast and a couple of massages are included.  Since most everything else was paid for with miles and points, we figured we could splurge on this hotel and pay cash.

In Singapore, we booked the Conrad using points.  We stayed here last year and loved it.  It is in a great location with a phenomenal lounge.  We hope to explore a bit more of the (albeit small) country and this is a great jumping off point to do just that.

Total Cost:  113,500 SPG Points, 120,000 Hilton Honors Points, $310 plus cash for the Four Seasons

Summary:

This is our second anniversary trip so we wanted to go pretty big.  We managed to redeem 678,375 points and miles for this trip.  Our total out of pocket (with a significant portion going toward our hotel in Ubud) cash expense for the entire trip should be under $3,500.  Considering coach paid tickets to Bali would have set us back about $2,000 each, I feel pretty good about the cost.  We leave in early July so look for the next installment in the next 6 weeks or so.  Thanks for reading!

We are rapidly approaching our next big trip to Bali and Singapore and getting pretty pumped.  We originally booked this trip for February of this year but had to move it due to a family commitment.  More on this during the Planning & Booking post.  I'm posting this a bit early to motivate me to write a complete trip report this time for your enjoyment.

The change actually worked out for the best.  We are now taking the trip at the same time as our second wedding anniversary so while it wasn't the original plan, we now have a pretty "suite" anniversary trip booked.  Plus the weather is better in Bali in July vs. February.

Four Seasons Bali at Sayan Pool

Over the past few years, I've put together half a dozen "big" trips for Emily and me and also helped a few others do the same.  But I have to say this is the best I've ever done in terms of destination, itinerary, use of points, etc...

The route to Bali and back - 23,309 miles in the air

We knew we wanted to go to Bali and it was just a question of when to go, how to get there, and where to stay.  I knew that I wanted to fly Singapore Suites First Class (with the famed "double bed") on one leg of the trip but I knew that scoring two tickets would be challenging.  What I didn't know when setting out to book this trip was that we would end up in suites first class (defined as a seat with a closing door) on both legs of the trip - all made possible with miles and points!  We also decided to break up the trip with a couple of nights in Singapore before flying home.

Next, I will cover the specifics of the booking process, miles/points used, and itinerary so you can think about how to take your own trip to Bali!

During our taxi and takeoff, we both listened to some music and enjoyed the seat.  The seat is really comfortable like a giant recliner with ample storage, padding, and recline.  Once fully airborne the service began.  The "Singapore Girls" working the cabin introduced themselves again, refilled our champagne glasses and went over the lunch menu.

As we were looking over the menu, I noticed (not sure how we didn't notice during boarding) that Chelsea Clinton was sitting in the window seat in our row.  She was returning from a Clinton Global Initiative trip to Southeast Asia and was traveling light - just her and her chief of staff.

Chelsea's post on the outbound.  For some reason I can't get this many likes on my posts.

Emily and I are huge Clinton fans so it was pretty cool.  She was friendly the entire flight and while the cabin crew seemed to know who she was, they didn't seem to single her out service wise which was neat to see.  When we deplaned in Seoul for our 90 minute layover, I expected her to be mobbed by people in the airport but no one seemed to care or perhaps no one recognized her.

After four great days in Singapore, we woke up early and grabbed a cab to the airport.  We were both super excited as this would be our first international first class flight together.

Singapore Airlines has a dedicated first class check-in facility at Changi airport.  Not as swanky as the Lufthansa First Class Terminal but nice nonetheless.  I totally forgot to tell the cab driver but Emily reminded me just as we arrived at the airport.  He dropped us off at the first class check-in and three airline staff members quickly descended on our cab.  We were the only ones checking in and everything was processed in a matter of minutes.  We were quickly escorted through the premium immigration line (Singapore does security at the gate) and shown to the Singapore Airlines Private Room.

We arrived off Singapore Airlines flight # 11 which lands in Singapore at 3:00AM local time.  Singapore Changi Airport is often regarded as the world's best airport.  At that hour, it was mostly deserted.  We were both a bit tired and groggy after nearly 19 hours of flying and were ready for a shower and bed.  Luckily, the airport is hyper efficient and we were reunited with our checked bags and in a cab within 15 minutes.

It took a bit of searching for our cab driver to find the hotel entrance in the dark but once he found it, we were checked in and up in our room.  After a three hour snooze, we woke up to a gorgeous Singaporean sunrise.

This is a bit of a long story but it's a good one so please bear with me...

It all started the morning of July 8th, 2012.  Emily and I were in Boulder preparing for our wedding which was slated (and actually happened) the following Saturday.  On Sunday mornings, she likes to sleep in as long as possible and I like to wake up at 6:00AM and try to wake her up.  Usually she finds this incredibly annoying but this was different.

My 5 Favorite Airport Lounges

One of the best perks of international premium travel are the lounges.  What's better than relaxing in a comfortable chair while drinking champagne and eating great food?

We're Star Alliance flyers (both United Gold for 2014) and several of these lounges allow access for Star Gold members even when traveling in Economy.  But for the most part, the ticket to these lounges is a First Class ticket.  The great news is that you can receive access (hasn't always been the case) to premium first class lounges even on an award ticket!

We've been fortunate to relax in some of the best lounges in the world so it was tough to narrow down the list.

Here are my top five favorite lounges:

1)  Lufthansa First Class Terminal at FRA

The First Class Terminal as a lounge within a dedicated terminal located down the street from the main terminal buildings at Germany's Frankfurt International Airport.  We visited the First Class Terminal after our first class flight on Lufthansa from Dallas to Frankfurt.  The terminal includes private security, a cigar room, a bar with over 100 premium whiskey's, a sit-down restaurant, amazing shower rooms complete with the famous "rubber ducky" and chauffeur service to the plane in a premium German automobile.
